Stranger Things Season 4 update

This Friday, the final two episodes of Stranger Things 4 will start streaming on Netflix. Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have already confirmed that this is the penultimate season of the show, with the story set to end in season 5. But that won’t be the end of the franchise. At least one Stranger Things spinoff is already in the works, and while Netflix has yet to officially announce it, the Duffer brothers are starting to share some details.

Stranger Things spinoff series in the works

In a recent interview with Variety, the Duffers began to pull back the curtain on the upcoming Stranger Things spinoff series. Variety’s Kate Aurthur asked the brothers if they would complete season 5 before starting work on the spinoff.

“Probably,” Matt Duffer answered.

“There’s a version of it developing in parallel,” Ross Duffer added, referring to the show that Netflix has yet to formally greenlight. “They would never shoot in parallel, but I think actually we’re going to start delving into that soon. I think as we’re winding down and finishing these visual effects Matt and I are going to start getting into it.”

Matt also explained why it has taken so long for Stranger Things to get a spinoff:

The reason we haven’t done anything is just because you just don’t want to be doing it for the wrong reasons, and it was just like, ‘Is this something I would want to make regardless of it being related to Stranger Things or not?’ And, definitely. Even if we took the Stranger Things title off of it, I’m so, so excited about it. But it’s going to be different than what anyone’s expecting, including Netflix.

The Duffers first started hinting at a spinoff back in February. They said that although season 5 would be the final season of their flagship show, “there are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.” That’s all we knew about the spinoff until this interview.

What will the spinoff series be about?

Unsurprisingly, with the season finale of Stranger Things 4 days away, the Duffer brothers didn’t want to distract us with plot details about the spinoff. But it turns out that someone has already guessed what the story of the spinoff will be.

“We think everyone — including Netflix — will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it’s very, very different,” the Duffer brothers revealed to Variety last month. “But somehow Finn Wolfhard — who is one crazy smart kid — correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”

The Duffer brothers expanded upon that revelation in their latest interview:

Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler), he wasn’t spitballing, ‘Is it this? Is it this?’ He just went, ‘I think this would be a cool spin-off.’ And we were like, ‘How in the world…’

So, other than Finn Wolfhard, Matt Duffer, and Ross Duffer, no one knows.

The biggest band in the world right now is Korean. Some of the biggest TV shows in the world, like Netflix’s Squid Game, are likewise Korean — and, in the opening moments of Netflix’s newly released Money Heist: Korea, these tidal waves of Korean pop culture intersect in such a way as to immediately distinguish this reimagining of Money Heist from its Spanish-language predecessor and to ground it in the here and now.

The show opens by introducing us to an enthusiastic, headphone-wearing member of ARMY, the name of the fandom associated with K-pop group BTS. This particular fan is a North Korean university student shown dancing to DNA, the lead single from BTS’ 2017 release Love Yourself: Her. She goes on to confess how much she loves K-pop and K-dramas (which, incidentally, Netflix has been as responsible as any service for popularizing around the globe).

What sets this member of BTS’ ARMY apart from other fans around the world, however, is that she has to enjoy the group’s music in secret. Also, this member of the BTS ARMY from Pyongyang’s Kim Il-Sung University goes on to join an actual army (the DPRK’s). And, eventually, she falls in with a group of thieves planning the mother of all heists.

Is Money Heist: Korea a remake?

We quickly come to learn that she’s one of the central figures in Money Heist: Korea. A show, by the way, that will feel immediately familiar to anyone who watched the original from a Spanish production team that eventually catapulted itself to the vanguard of Netflix’s global release slate.

Here, again, a motley crew of have-nots and rejects assembles under the auspices of a brilliant Professor. During the actual heist itself, the crew wears red track suits instantly recognizable to fans of the original show. They also wear white face masks that are similar to but not copies of the Salvador Dali masks worn in the Spanish original.

However, things veer off in an all-new narrative direction pretty much right away.

Netflix dusts off one of its greatest hits

For one thing, events take place in an imaginary future wherein North and South Korea have agreed on reunification. A so-called “joint economic area” has been established on the border between both countries, which looks like a capitalist paradise. It’s sort of a “practice city,” meant to show everyone what’s possible in the reunified country. And it’s here where a mint operates that will print a new currency for the nation.

Beneath the surface, though, the reality isn’t quite so rosy.

money heist korea

The rich, as we’re told more than once in Money Heist: Korea, are the ones who got richer. The show grapples with issues of class, immigration, and social stratification that very much resemble their real-world counterparts. And it’s against that backdrop that The Professor and his crew set out to execute a daring crime.

They’re not stealing money from anyone, though. At least, not as such. If you’ve seen the original, you already know where this is going. Their plan is to break into the mint and simply print a staggering amount of money, instead.

That’s easier said than done, though. But enough Netflix subscribers have already been intrigued enough to see what the thieves here are capable of that, even though the show has only been available on the streamer for just four days, it’s already a Top 10 Netflix release in the US. Money Heist: Korea will also almost certainly be a top release this week when Netflix releases its new data on the latest Top 10 titles from around the world.

One of the biggest Netflix releases of all time is back — sort of.

The Spanish-language thriller Money Heist, released back in 2017, was a twisty, action-packed drama about a stylishly-clad band of thieves — working under the auspices of a brilliant character known as The Professor — who (initially) break into the Royal Mint of Spain. There was a Robin Hood, us-against-the-system vibe to the show, a populist streak that helped turn it into a staggeringly huge Netflix original series.

In fact, three of the series’ five seasons occupy individual slots on the streamer’s Top 10 ranking of the biggest non-English TV shows of all time, having garnered hundreds of millions of hours viewed worldwide between them.

So, having said that, can you blame the streaming giant for wanting to resurrect the now-ended series and give it a try in Korea, reworking the show into an all-new Netflix release for another massive global audience?

Money Heist: Korea

Money Heist: Korea is one of five new high-profile Netflix releases everyone will be talking about this week. It’s probably less correct, by the way, to regard the show as a remake than a “reimagining,” however. A remake, for example, would imply that the main difference here is simply the language, with pretty much everything else largely the same.

Instead, the crux of the story here is completely different. This time, the series imagines a unified Korean peninsula in an imaginary future. Naturally, there would have to be a unified currency for such a new and expanded Korea, right? Voila: The need to print new money, which becomes a juicy target for our thieves.

Speaking of the thieves, they do once again don bright red jumpsuits and white face masks. There’s also still a brilliant “Professor” behind it all. And the thieves take the names of cities as aliases, just like they did in the original Money Heist.

“As a border looks set to vanish,” Netflix explains about this new series release, “the people of a long-divided peninsula seem about to reunite — but there are unsettling consequences.”

Under the new economic union, the streamer continues, only the rich have gotten richer. “Into this ruthless new world of inequality steps a crew of thieves from North and South Korea, led by the Professor, who set out to pull off a history-making heist.”

In this new retelling, Netflix continues, a “Joint Security Area” is situated between the two halves of the peninsula. And it contains a mint that becomes the focus of the story. “Amid reunification, the mint is printing a new unified currency as the groundwork to build a stable joint economy.”

Other new Netflix releases

In terms of other new Netflix releases now available to stream, meanwhile, besides the new Money Heist? There’s a new slapstick action-comedy starring Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson to check out. Plus the long-awaited Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, and a new reality series about super-spoiled, overly sensitive young people. Additionally, you can read more about each release, with details from Netflix, below.

The Man From Toronto: “A case of mistaken identity forces a bumbling entrepreneur to team up with a notorious assassin known as The Man from Toronto in hopes of staying alive.”

Umbrella Academy — Season 3: “Reunited by their father’s death, estranged siblings with extraordinary powers uncover shocking family secrets — and a looming threat to humanity.”

Snowflake Mountain: “Hopelessly entitled or simply in need of tough love? Ten spoiled young adults experience nature without a parental safety net in this reality series.”

A New Netflix movie to check out

We’ve also got one more title to mention, in our look at the latest and buzziest Netflix releases.

The #5 movie on Netflix in the US at the time of this writing, which hit the streamer just this week, is the sweet Love & Gelato — a Netflix release from writer-director Brandon Camp. It was adapted from the novel of the same name by Jenna Evans Welch. And it’s easy to see why this one is so popular among many Netflix subscribers at the moment. It’s got young love, the picturesque setting of Italy — what more could you want?

As for the story, Lina is a young American girl who’s traveled to Rome to honor her mother’s memory. “Catapulted into an unknown country,” Netflix explains, “too messy and full of chaos for her serious, methodical, and even a little nerdy nature, she will find herself forced to have to deal with all her obsessions, anxieties, and fears but also to have to deal with the past of her mother who hides some surprises and some secrets.

“Immersed in magical landscapes and in unfamiliar and exciting foods, fascinated by the unique style of Italian fashion, overwhelmed by romantic unexpected events, and overwhelmed by a new and anomalous family, Lina will learn to look to the world and to herself with a finally different eye.”

Most Netflix original shows tend to get the ax from the streamer around Seasons 3 or, in rare cases, a fourth season of the series. But not when it comes to the glamorous real estate ladies of Selling Sunset, the guilty pleasure Netflix show that just got picked up by the streamer for two more seasons (#s 6 and 7).

Name almost any Netflix show you can think of, and chances are its run has ended at least two and probably three seasons behind where Selling Sunset will be once Season 7 rolls around. And not only that — this dishy, buzz-worthy show that celebrates the wealth porn of the 1 percenters has already inspired two spinoffs (Selling Tampa, and Selling the O.C.).

Will there be a season 6 of Selling Sunset?

Netflix announced on Thursday that its Emmy-nominated docusoap will have at least two more seasons. And not only that — production is set to get underway later this summer.

The show takes place amid the high-end world of LA real estate, and it follows the successful female realtors who work together at The Oppenheim Group, an agency where the competition is cutthroat and the gorgeous surroundings of the Hollywood Hills and Sunset Strip belie the hard work required to “make it.”

Moreover, Netflix announced the Selling Sunset news in tandem with the announcement of a slew of other new show details. They include premiere dates for several real estate-themed series coming to the streamer, like:

“Luxe real estate. Major drama.”

For those who haven’t checked it out yet, Netflix promises that Selling Sunset viewers will get episode after episode of “luxe real estate” and “major drama.”

The show follows a group of the city’s most successful female realtors who all work under the same roof, who “work hard and play harder, as they compete with the cutthroat LA market and each other. These ladies will do what it takes to make it to the top of their game, all while trying to keep their personal lives intact.”

Season 5 of Selling Sunset currently has a percent 100 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. All 11 episodes of the latest season are streaming now on Netflix. And that total includes the season’s reunion episode, for which host Tan France (from Netflix’s Queer Eye) leads a discussion with the cast about the show and their lives today.

Kit Harington as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones.

Last week, reports claimed that a Game of Thrones sequel series focusing on Jon Snow was in the early stages of development at HBO. In the days since, even more evidence has surfaced, seemingly confirming the existence of the unannounced project.

Game of Thrones sequel series coming to HBO

Variety reported last Thursday that Kit Harington was going to reprise his role as Jon Snow in a live-action show set after the events of Game of Thrones. Days later, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones) revealed during a BBC interview not only that she knew about the sequel, but that Harington came up with the idea in the first place:

He has told me about it. And I know it exists. It’s happening. It’s been created by Kit as far as I can understand, so he’s in it from the ground up. So what you will be watching, hopefully, if it happens, is certified by Kit Harington.

George R.R. Martin chimes in

Clarke appeared to catch herself halfway through her answer, realizing she might have said too much. But George R.R. Martin himself let Clarke off the hook by formally confirming the series in a blog post. Martin says the series is indeed in development and that the working title is SNOW. It’s one of four spinoffs currently in the works.

Here’s what the writer of A Song of Ice and Fire was willing and able to share:

It seems as though Emilia Clarke has already mentioned that SNOW was Kit’s idea in a recent interview. So that part is out. Yes, it was Kit Harrington who brought the idea to us. I cannot tell you the names of the writers/showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific. Various rumors are floating around about my involvement, or lack of same. I am involved, just as I am with THE HEDGE KNIGHT and THE SEA SNAKE and TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, and all the animated shows. Kit’s team have visited me here in Santa Fe and worked with me and my own team of brilliant, talented writer[s]/consultants to hammer out the show.

Martin explained that all four of the aforementioned Game of Thrones “successor shows” are still in the script stage. None of them have been greenlit yet, which means there’s no telling which or how many will actually make it to air.

What’s next for the franchise?

The first Game of Thrones spinoff wrapped filming of its first season in February. House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and will chronicle the downfall of House Targaryen. The ten-episode first season will debut on HBO in August with a cast that includes Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, and Olivia Cooke.

Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney Plus.

On Wednesday, the sixth and final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered on Disney Plus. It was a thrilling conclusion that connected a few more dots between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. But while the end of this season was a foregone conclusion, Obi-Wan did manage to surprise with a cameo that very few of us saw coming.

Before we talk about the cameo, please know that huge spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi follow below. If you haven’t seen the finale, you might want to skip this article for now. If you don’t care about spoilers, feel free to read on.

Obi-Wan Kenobi delivers the ultimate cameo

Following his rematch with Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi returns to Tatooine to watch over Luke Skywalker once again.

In the closing moments of the finale, we see Obi-Wan trekking out into the desert, where he will remain until Luke seeks him out about a decade later. Just before the credits roll, a Force ghost appears in the desert. Qui-Gon Jinn, once again played by Liam Neeson, has returned to guide his former Padawan to his new home in the desert.

This is the first and only time Neeson has ever reprised the role in live-action. He did voice the character a few times in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but we haven’t seen the actor as the character since The Phantom Menace hit theaters in 1999.

So what made the action star don the Jedi robes once more? The Hollywood Reporter asked him that exact question this week, and he offered this answer:

“I certainly didn’t want anyone else playing Qui-Gon Jinn, and I wanted to show my respect for George and that mythical world that he created,” Neeson said. “Plus, Ewan is a pal, and I loved working with him during The Phantom Menace 25 years ago.”

As the THR article explains, Yoda told Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith that he would teach him how to connect with the Force ghost of his deceased master. It took more than 17 years, but we finally got to see the two achieve this connection on Wednesday.

Will there be a second season?

Prior to its debut, Disney described Obi-Wan Kenobi as a limited event series. Typically, event series like these don’t get a second season, but the stars of the show are holding out hope. Here’s what Ewan McGregor told GQ in an interview just last week:

I really hope we do another. If I could do one of these every now and again – I’d just be happy about it.

Similarly, Hayden Christensen made it clear he’d be game to come back in an interview with Radio Times published on the same day episode 5 dropped:

Well, it was definitely conceived as a standalone story. But I would love to continue with this character. You know, I think there’s certainly more there to explore and I would be so excited to get to do so.

We’ll have to wait and see if Disney has any other plans for Obi-Wan and co.

On Friday, Amazon’s Prime Video service is giving fans of its anti-hero drama The Boys something they’ve been waiting for three years to see. That’s right, the notorious “Herogasm” is finally here — and, suffice it to say, the team behind the hit Prime Video series seems to have pulled out all the stops to do justice to this episode’s truly insane bacchanalia.

Viewers have been dying to know how the show would tackle this event that was depicted in a six-issue spinoff of the comics that the overall series is based on. In that spinoff, the Boys sneak into the week-long “Herogasm,” an orgy held each year exclusively for Supes.

In case you’re wondering how wild this episode will be? The Boys’ showrunner has described it as so graphic, it’s practically porn.

Herogasm episode coming Friday

Prime Video, for its part, has teased a bit about what’s coming tomorrow. Friday’s episode, among other things, includes everything from “a massive supe orgy, airborne penetration, dildo-based maiming, extra strength lube, icicle phalluses” and more. As a result, the service promises this extremely inappropriate episode is not “suitable for any audience.”

In a tweet from the show’s official Twitter account, which included a #Herogasm hashtag, fans also got their first taste of “the only footage legal would approve to show ya ahead of time.”

Check out the clip below to see “The Deep” declare, with a degree of shock: “This is herogasm.”

It doesn’t take a prognosticator with any degree of prophetic insight here to surmise that viewership for Friday’s episode of The Boys is going to be through the roof. And, perhaps, the same goes for the inevitable complaints to the FCC that will no doubt follow. No less than The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke, in fact, has raved that he was told the following by an executive at Sony, about the Herogasm episode:

“Not only is this my favorite of The Boys. This is my favorite episode of television.”

The Boys season 4 news

Season 3 of the show currently has a near-perfect critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes (98 percent). That’s thanks to praise from critics like one CNN reviewer, who described it thus. “The Boys remains creatively fearless and, for those with the stomach for it, a great deal of fun. As creative combinations go, like Homelander, that one-two punch looks pretty near unstoppable.”

Prime Video dropped the first three episodes of season 3 on Friday, June 3. New episodes have since premiered every Friday. And they’re leading up to the season finale on July 8. According to Prime Video, over the first three days of its third season, the worldwide audience for The Boys has grown by 17 percent from season 2. Since season 1, there’s been a staggering 234% increase.

The Boys continues to push boundaries in storytelling while also being relentlessly entertaining and threading the needle on social satire that feels all too real,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said in a news release. There’s “pushing boundaries,” though, and then this week’s Herogasm episode. It’s a whole different something else entirely.

A hilarious Twitter post that’s attracted hundreds of likes in the leadup to a long-awaited Netflix debut on Wednesday depicts a mother sitting in front of a screen, oblivious to the fact that her baby on the floor is on fire. “Not now sweety,” the mother says. “Mummy’s waiting for The Umbrella Academy season 3.”

The new season of this Netflix original series, among other things, lands the Hargreeves siblings in an alternate timeline that they created. One in which the titular Umbrella Academy doesn’t exist at all, but something called the Sparrow Academy does.

Umbrella Academy season 3 is now on Netflix

“After putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday,” Netflix’s official description explains, “the Umbrella Academy return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline once and for all.

“But after a brief moment of celebration, they realize things aren’t exactly (okay, not at all) how they left them. Enter the Sparrow Academy. Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone’s concerns.”

The heroes must navigate the usual amalgam of challenges, losses, and surprises. Along with confronting an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the universe. Something that, whoops, the heroes might have caused themselves.

“Now,” Netflix continues, “all they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?”

Reviews and reactions

Season 3 of the show currently enjoys a strong 92 critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers like one from the UK’s Daily Telegraph liken it to “Wes Anderson meets Curb Your Enthusiasm — with a sprinkling of “biff pow!” comic book excitement stirred through.”

A Collider review goes on to opine about the show that “season 3 blends together the moodiness of season 1 with the brisk pacing, bizarro nature, and enormous heart of season 2. In fact, the third season of The Umbrella Academy may just be the most emotional and personal season yet.”

In all likelihood, the new season will crack into the US-based Top 10 list of TV shows inside the Netflix app possibly as soon as today, if not by week’s end.

Meanwhile, as to whether the show becomes a top Netflix title globally? We’ll know whether that’s the case as soon as this coming Tuesday. That’s when the streamer publishes its next weekly charts of the top content on the service around the world.

“No matter what it takes, no matter how many lies I have to tell, I will take revenge on Tommy Shelby.” So promises Michael Gray, son of Tommy’s slain Aunt Polly, at the beginning of the sublimely fantastic Season 6 of Peaky Blinders — which happens to be one of the biggest Netflix series in the world this week, coming just shy of dethroning Stranger Things Season 4, Part 1, in fact.

One reason for Peaky Blinders’ high ranking on the latest list of the most-watched English-language Netflix series globally is that the just-released Season 6 marks the end of what’s evolved into a truly iconic series about gangsters-turned-businessmen from post-WWI England. All of it, from the spooky Nick Cave theme song to the stylish fashions to the career-best performance from Cillian Murphy as head gangster Tommy Shelby combined to actually make Season 6 one of the best seasons of TV you’ll come across in 2022.

One of the things about Peaky Blinders that’s always been so fascinating to watch from one season to the next is how Tommy Shelby navigates competing constituencies — and somehow manages to survive, or even come out on top when it looks like the walls are closing in.

This time around, he’s got Michael gunning for him in response to the death of his aunt (who died as a result of the botched assassination of a fascist politician last season that Tommy engineered).

Separate from that, Tommy sets out for North America to take advantage of business opportunities that present themselves thanks to the end of Prohibition. Along the way, Tommy also gets enmeshed with IRA freedom fighters. Plus a pro-Germany fascist member of the English parliament, as well as gangsters from Boston. Plus, he has to navigate all of that in addition to dealing with an ominous diagnosis from his personal doctor.

Suffice it to say, however, that the writers wrap up all of the season’s disparate story threads as satisfyingly as you could hope. I actually found myself paying close attention to the clock during the final episode of the season. 45 minutes left, how are they going to wrap all this up? Now 30 minutes … 20 minutes … oh god, and now that (*spoiler*) Tommy just learned, which changes everything!!

In right-wing parlance, “snowflake” is a pejorative term hurled at young people perceived to be too sensitive, overly emotional, and easily offended by the actions of other people. In its quest to be all things to all people, Netflix on Wednesday will debut a new reality series, Snowflake Mountain, that sort of feels like it was tailor-made to appeal to those culture warriors who think these kinds of youngsters are exceedingly odious.

Really, though, “Kids these days!” is always a favorite object of derision in every generation, it seems. “There’s a heap of young people who can’t even unload a dishwasher, let alone hold down a job,” a Snowflake Mountain voiceover explains. “And these 10 snowflakes’ families have reached their breaking points. So they’ve tricked their giant babies into traveling far, far away to make them grow the hell up.”

This series, of course, isn’t the first reality show Netflix has attempted. Snowflake Mountain, however, is arguably in a class of its own. Because this one might just be one of the streamer’s only titles in the genre that conservatives get a kick out of hate-watching.

Snowflake Mountain release date

We don’t know for sure how many episodes will be included at the moment. We’ll find out soon enough, though. Because Snowflake Mountain will be available to stream on Netflix starting tomorrow — on Wednesday, June 22.

“Snowflake Mountain is a funny, warm-hearted reality show which takes a bunch of clueless kidults who aren’t yet living to their full potential and puts them through their paces at a wilderness survival retreat to try and kickstart them into standing on their own two feet,” Netflix explains.

“The back-to-basics camp is a rude awakening to just how pampered their lives have been so far. At stake is a transformative cash prize for the lucky winner. There’s no running water, no parents to wait on them, and, worst of all, no Wi-Fi. But, by connecting to nature, they’ll learn to graduate as fully-functioning adults.”

Reviews and reaction

From “cringe-worthy nonsense” to “a contrived Netflix reality show as dumb as all the others,” here’s a look at how Snowflake Mountain has been greeted thus far, ahead of its streaming debut.

“I don’t watch TV,” one Twitter user snarked. But when I saw a headline for this show called Snowflake Mountain where millennials have to survive the wild on their own, I feel like there should be a spinoff where 80-year-old boomers have to figure out how to convert to a PDF with no help.”

From The UK’s The Telegraph: A cast of spoiled, “entitled and delusional 20-somethings are put through their paces” by ex-military types. Overall, the show is “cringe-worthy nonsense.”

The Chicago Sun-Times: “So dumb, so pandering, so ridiculous.”

And, finally, from Time magazine: Snowflake Mountain “suggests an effort on Netflix’s part to disassociate itself from the accusations of liberal bias — or what Elon Musk, now a freshly rebranded Republican, has described as the streamer’s “woke mind virus’ — that now plague entertainment behemoths as studiously apolitical as Disney.”
