Every month, streaming services add dozens of new TV shows and movies to their libraries. They do this in order to keep their subscribers around and entice new ones into signing up. But no matter how exciting these additions may be, there are far too many services for any of us to subscribe to them all. Thankfully, paid services aren’t the only choices — many free alternatives have started popping up all over. One of the best options is The Roku Channel, and the service is adding a bunch of free movies to its library in July.

The Roku Channel added 26 new movies back in June, including Independence Day and Taken. Another 22 movies are joining the library in July. Some of the highlights are As Good as it Gets, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Space Jam, and White Chicks.

They are all free to watch on The Roku Channel. You can access The Roku Channel on nearly any smart device. The service is also available online at TheRokuChannel.com.

In addition to on-demand movies and shows, The Roku Channel also features a number of live channels. These include ABC News Live, Family Feud, Real Crime, Fubo Sports Network, Movie Favorites by Lifetime, and WeatherNation.

This Friday, the final two episodes of Stranger Things 4 will start streaming on Netflix. Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have already confirmed that this is the penultimate season of the show, with the story set to end in season 5. But that won’t be the end of the franchise. At least one Stranger Things spinoff is already in the works, and while Netflix has yet to officially announce it, the Duffer brothers are starting to share some details.

Stranger Things spinoff series in the works

In a recent interview with Variety, the Duffers began to pull back the curtain on the upcoming Stranger Things spinoff series. Variety’s Kate Aurthur asked the brothers if they would complete season 5 before starting work on the spinoff.

“Probably,” Matt Duffer answered.

“There’s a version of it developing in parallel,” Ross Duffer added, referring to the show that Netflix has yet to formally greenlight. “They would never shoot in parallel, but I think actually we’re going to start delving into that soon. I think as we’re winding down and finishing these visual effects Matt and I are going to start getting into it.”

Matt also explained why it has taken so long for Stranger Things to get a spinoff:

The reason we haven’t done anything is just because you just don’t want to be doing it for the wrong reasons, and it was just like, ‘Is this something I would want to make regardless of it being related to Stranger Things or not?’ And, definitely. Even if we took the Stranger Things title off of it, I’m so, so excited about it. But it’s going to be different than what anyone’s expecting, including Netflix.

The Duffers first started hinting at a spinoff back in February. They said that although season 5 would be the final season of their flagship show, “there are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.” That’s all we knew about the spinoff until this interview.

What will the spinoff series be about?

Unsurprisingly, with the season finale of Stranger Things 4 days away, the Duffer brothers didn’t want to distract us with plot details about the spinoff. But it turns out that someone has already guessed what the story of the spinoff will be.

“We think everyone — including Netflix — will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it’s very, very different,” the Duffer brothers revealed to Variety last month. “But somehow Finn Wolfhard — who is one crazy smart kid — correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”

The Duffer brothers expanded upon that revelation in their latest interview:

Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler), he wasn’t spitballing, ‘Is it this? Is it this?’ He just went, ‘I think this would be a cool spin-off.’ And we were like, ‘How in the world…’

So, other than Finn Wolfhard, Matt Duffer, and Ross Duffer, no one knows.

In his latest newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman discussed all of the products Apple plans to ship in the coming months. The iPhone 14 is what we are most excited to see, but it’s just one of many devices Apple will unveil this fall. We also expect to see the Apple Watch Series 8, but according to Gurman, it won’t be faster than its predecessor.

Apple Watch Series 8 isn’t getting a spec bump

Gurman reports that “the S8 chip will have the same specifications as the S7, which was also the same as the S6.” In other words, the 2022 Apple Watch should run about the same as the 2020 Apple Watch. If you are holding out for a more powerful wearable, give it another year. Gurman says that next year’s models will get an “all-new processor.”

Gurman also reiterated that he believes Apple will reveal three new Apple Watch models this fall: The second-generation Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 8, and a rugged smartwatch for extreme sports. The new rugged model will reportedly have extra impact resistance and protection for hikers, bikers, swimmers, and more.

As for the new Apple Watch SE, Gurman says that the low-cost model will stick with the same screen size as the old model rather than matching the larger screen of the Series 7. Although the screen isn’t getting an upgrade, the new SE might feature the same S8 chip as the Apple Watch Series 8 — a major upgrade over the S5 chip of the original.

Of course, the power of the processor on the Apple Watch isn’t quite as important as it is on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Even without upgraded specifications, the Apple Watch should pick up a few long-awaited new tricks with watchOS 9.

Many of the new features revolve around working out. watchOS 9 shows more data on the display than ever before, so you can keep track of your Activity rings, Heart Rate Zones, Power, and Elevation with a twist of the Digital Crown.

The software update also allows lets Apple Watch automatically transition between running, swimming, and biking. Less fiddling with your watch means more time working out. You can also customize your workouts to suit your training style.

Finally, although Apple has not officially confirmed this yet, Mark Gurman also suspects that low-power mode will show up as a “hardware-exclusive feature” in watchOS 9. Presumably, you’ll need one of the 2022 models to take advantage of this feature.

Much like iOS 16, watchOS 9 won’t support every device that watchOS 8 supports. You won’t be able to get watchOS 9 on Apple Watch Series 3, and Gurman expects Apple to discontinue the 2017 model as a result. The first-generation Apple Watch SE should take its place at the same price point, while the next-gen SE will become the mid-tier option.

All of Apple’s secrets will be revealed during the company’s September showcase. Until then, we suspect that leaks will continue to spring.

Last week, reports claimed that a Game of Thrones sequel series focusing on Jon Snow was in the early stages of development at HBO. In the days since, even more evidence has surfaced, seemingly confirming the existence of the unannounced project.

Game of Thrones sequel series coming to HBO

Variety reported last Thursday that Kit Harington was going to reprise his role as Jon Snow in a live-action show set after the events of Game of Thrones. Days later, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones) revealed during a BBC interview not only that she knew about the sequel, but that Harington came up with the idea in the first place:

He has told me about it. And I know it exists. It’s happening. It’s been created by Kit as far as I can understand, so he’s in it from the ground up. So what you will be watching, hopefully, if it happens, is certified by Kit Harington.

George R.R. Martin chimes in

Clarke appeared to catch herself halfway through her answer, realizing she might have said too much. But George R.R. Martin himself let Clarke off the hook by formally confirming the series in a blog post. Martin says the series is indeed in development and that the working title is SNOW. It’s one of four spinoffs currently in the works.

Here’s what the writer of A Song of Ice and Fire was willing and able to share:

It seems as though Emilia Clarke has already mentioned that SNOW was Kit’s idea in a recent interview. So that part is out. Yes, it was Kit Harrington who brought the idea to us. I cannot tell you the names of the writers/showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific. Various rumors are floating around about my involvement, or lack of same. I am involved, just as I am with THE HEDGE KNIGHT and THE SEA SNAKE and TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, and all the animated shows. Kit’s team have visited me here in Santa Fe and worked with me and my own team of brilliant, talented writer[s]/consultants to hammer out the show.

Martin explained that all four of the aforementioned Game of Thrones “successor shows” are still in the script stage. None of them have been greenlit yet, which means there’s no telling which or how many will actually make it to air.

What’s next for the franchise?

The first Game of Thrones spinoff wrapped filming of its first season in February. House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and will chronicle the downfall of House Targaryen. The ten-episode first season will debut on HBO in August with a cast that includes Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, and Olivia Cooke.

Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) revealed this week that an Italian company’s hacking tools were being used to hack iOS and Android devices. According to the report, Italy’s RCS Lab “uses a combination of tactics” to target mobile phones. RCS Lab claims that it provides law enforcement agencies with technological solutions for the “lawful interception” of user data. Google’s analysis of the company’s tools suggests otherwise.

New spyware used to hack iOS and Android phones

Google identified victims of the spyware campaign in Italy and Kazakhstan. The campaign is not especially complex, but it’s clearly effective enough.

As Google explains, the hacker begins by sending a unique link to a target. When the target clicks on the link, the page tells the user to download and install a malicious application. This sounds like a fairly standard campaign, but it gets much worse.

Google believes that in some cases the attackers worked with internet service providers to disable the target’s mobile data connectivity. The attacker would then send a message with a link telling the target to download an application to restore their connectivity. This is likely why most of the malicious apps posed as mobile carrier apps.

When the attackers weren’t able to coordinate with ISPs to trick their targets, the malicious software looked like a messaging application instead. The page would tell the user to install an app in order to recover their account.

Google doesn’t believe that the malicious apps were ever available from the App Store or on Google Play. Rather, iPhone users would have to sideload the apps and Android users would need to enable the installation of applications from unknown sources.

“This campaign is a good reminder that attackers do not always use exploits to achieve the permissions they need,” Google explained. “Basic infection vectors and drive by downloads still work and can be very efficient with the help from local ISPs.”

Google says that in order to protect users, it warned every Android victim, made changes to Google Play Protect, and disabled Firebase projects used in this campaign.

Are iPhone users safe from the hack?

Thankfully, as noted by Macworld, Apple has already patched all of the exploits RCS Lab took advantage of in iOS. Here are the exploits that have since been patched:

• CVE-2018-4344 internally referred to and publicly known as LightSpeed.
• CVE-2019-8605 internally referred to as SockPort2 and publicly known as SockPuppet
• CVE-2020-3837 internally referred to and publicly known as TimeWaste.
• CVE-2020-9907 internally referred to as AveCesare.
• CVE-2021-30883 internally referred to as Clicked2, marked as being exploited in-the-wild by Apple in October 2021.
• CVE-2021-30983 internally referred to as Clicked3, fixed by Apple in December 2021.

As long as your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS, you don’t need to worry about the RCS Lab spyware. That said, this is yet another reason to keep your devices up to date with all of the latest patches and protection from similar attacks.

Google’s Chrome browser isn’t just the biggest desktop browser in the world — it’s also the most popular mobile browser on Earth. That will likely continue as long as Google continues to add new features to its app as frequently as it does. Speaking of, Google announced five new features coming to Chrome on iPhone and iPad this week.

5 new features coming to Chrome on iOS

These new features are available in the latest version of Chrome on iPhone and iPad.

Stronger protection from phishing and malware

In Chrome 103, iPhone and iPad owners will finally have access to Enhanced Safe Browsing. If you turn on ESB, Chrome will predict and warn you proactively when you visit a dangerous website. Chrome will also tell you if your username and password have been compromised in a data breach. It will then prompt you to change them.

Fill in passwords on any app

You can now set up Google Password Manager as your Autofill provider on iPhone and iPad. This will let Chrome quickly create, store, and fill in your passwords on any website or within any app on your phone or tablet. Very useful if all your passwords are in Chrome.

Discover something new, or pick up where you left off

Google wants to make it easier to find fresh content while browsing on Chrome. In order to accomplish that, a new “Discover” section will appear when you open a new tab. You can still find your recent tabs as well. This feature will hit Android soon too.

Translate websites faster into your language

Chrome will use on-device machine learning to make websites translate into your preferred language faster. The latest version of Chrome includes “an updated language identification model to accurately figure out the language of the page you’re visiting.”

Use Chrome Actions to quickly get things done

Finally, Chrome Actions make it easier to get stuff done from the address bar. From now on, if you want to perform an action like clearing your browsing history, opening an incognito tab, or setting Chrome as your default browser, just type it into the address bar. Chrome Actions will let you spend less time in menus and more time browsing.

Other additions

The release notes for Chrome 103 on the App Store reveal a few other new features:

• Manage camera and microphone permissions for specific sites using the camera and microphone icons in the address bar.
• You can now download and add iCalendar (iCal) files to your Calendar.
• Chrome will remove duplicate New Tab Page tabs in the background.
• Stability and performance improvements.
